This study says Americans need to stop chasing diet trends

This study says Americans need to stop chasing diet trendsThis study says Americans need to stop chasing diet trendsA new study tracking the glucose levels of 1,100 Americans and UK citizens, posits that there is no such thing as the perfect diet. The researchers had the participants eat similar regular meals, (muffins in the morning, sandwiches in the afternoon), and even though 60% of the study group were identical twins, no two people had the same reaction to the same regimen. Even we were surprised by the results, the studys lead author Tim Spector told geschftliches miteinander Insider.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreTim Spector is an epidemiologist and professor at Kings College in London. Spector and his team sought to dispel the myth that sees many Americans fiendishly keeping an eye out for a final word on dieting, particularly the ones that boast miraculous weight loss promotion. Every five years or so,a new diet premieres with claims to repudiate the purported benefits of the last one.Diet fads reinforce generalized nutrition tropes into our head fats are bad, fruit is good. By listening and learning from his body specifically, Spector learned that it actually didnt respond all that well to grapes, so he only treats himself to them about once a week. Most people respond the same way to the basics, like carb intake and fatty foods, but even then, Spector believes it is an absolute mistake to take conventional diet wisdom as gospel. The MethodologyThe study which was conducted in conjunction with researchers at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital was presented at The American Society of Nutrition Conference held in June of this year. The study group was given prepackaged meals to eat and then tasked with taking pictures of their food, monitoring their glucose levels, fats, insulin and blood sugar levels via blood samples. They were also fitt ed with a device that helped researchers keep track of their exercise habits over the course of fourteen days. The participants ate muffins for breakfast most mornings within the study period. There were three variations served, you had your heavy fat, low sugar muffin, then there was a muffin with an average amount of fat, and then a muffin that contained more fat but less sugar than the previous two options. When two weeks passed the researchers went over the results finding zero consistency. It didnt matter how much or little participants exercised either, the data was all over the place. There wasnt a difference between sporty and non-sporty people that we could see, Spector told Business Insider. There were many people who ran every day that had a bad fat response.Spector urges individuals trying to lose weight to ask a nutritionist to assist them with personal diets instead of trying to squeeze into general abstinence from fats and carbs. Off the back of these findings, Spector launched a personal nutrition company called Zoe. The organization helps users find out how they respond to specific foods, in order to optimize metabolic effects. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Do you have a social media addiction Heres how to tell

Do you have a social media addiction Heres how to tellDo you have a social media addiction Heres how to tellDoes the message Youre All Caught Up get yur pulse racing? Cant remember the last time yur day didnt start with a sweep of all yur social profiles? Are you that friend that cant get through brunch without posting at least one Instagram Story? In a world driven by likes, comments, and followers, its all too easy to become dependant on our trusty mobile devices. Theyre our reliable boredom quenchers, ready to fill those dead hours on ourlong morning commutes. Even queuing for coffee has become a chance to scroll. Its a never-ending cycle of digital consumption.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIf reaching for your phone has become as automatic as checking the time, it could be a good idea to reflect on your habits. Learn how to spot the red flags of social media addiction and d iscover how to develop healthy boundaries from the grips of your digital world.1. You Sleep Next To Your PhoneIts 2 am and your mind is racing over tomorrows to-do list. Before you know it, youve rolled over and picked up your phone and soon you realise youve been scrolling for nearly an hour. Sound familiar?Keeping your mobile phone in the bedroom is a recipe for disaster. Why? Because temptation is always within arms reach. Whether its the ping of a late-night notification or a quick check of the time in the middle of the night, the blue light created from our smartphones can wreak havoc on our body clock. Once our circadian rhythm has been disrupted, our mood and metabolism are fooled into believing its time to rise and shine again, making it nigh impossible to fall asleep. How to fix itGo retro and invest in an analog alarm clock to keep by your bedside. Switch your phone to Do Not Disturb mode an hour before you hit the sack, move your charger to the living room andmake your bed room a non-negotiable tech-free zone.2. You Turn On Notifications From All Your Favourite AppsYouve just uploaded a new gram and youre watching the likes roll in. But, have you ever stopped to think about what impact these notifications are having on your mental health, focus and productivity?Although the rush of endorphins might feel great, constantly receiving alerts from your social networking apps can dramatically disrupt your flow and prevent you from diving into deep work. Just a quick flash of your screen with a new message or Instagram follower can be enough to draw our attention back into our phone and away from whatever were trying to work on.How to fix itHead into your phones settings and turn off notifications on all your social apps. And I mean ALL OF THEM. This will reduce your chances of multi-tasking and improve the quality and accuracy of the work you produce. Consider turning on Do Not Disturb mode when youre about to get stuck into an important task to help you wa rd off any unwanted distractions.3. You Reach For Your Phone At Every OpportunityYour bestie has just skipped off to the bathroom and before you know it youre fingers are already reaching for your smartphone. Or maybe youre at the park with your pup and start answering a few facebook inc messages while they chase their favorite furry friend? When we find ourselves with a moment of space, social media is what most of us will head straight for. Its an easy way to keep our mind stimulated, without having to exert too much effort. But just imagine if we spent that time reading, tuning into a good podcast or even just taking in the world around us?How to fix itResist the urge to dive into your phone by actively challenging your default responses. Set yourself up for success by packing your favorite magazine or novel in your bag anddownload a library of podcaststo give you plenty to do besides scrolling. Remember, it takes at least 2 weeks to form a habit so dont lose heart if you slip up at first Keep checking in and reminding yourself of other ways to keep yourself occupied that dont involve social media.4. You Always Keep Your Phone Within SightWhere is your mobile right now? On your desk? In your lap? Right in front of your fingertips? The habit to always have our phone within eyeshot might not seem destructive, but its presence can have big impacts on our wellbeing and relationships. If every coffee date, work meeting and date night features our trusty mobile phone on the table, its difficult to be fully present and show up authentically for those we care about. How to fix itMake a commitment to yourself to keep your phone nestled in your bag at every social event for a week and see what a difference it makes to the quality of your conversations. Why not try a tech-free day once a week and see how your state of mind and mood changes too? This article first appeared on A Girl in Progress. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Write a Stay at Home Mom Resume to Return to the Workforce

How to Write a Stay at Home Mom Resume to Return to the WorkforceHow to Write a Stay at Home Mom Resume to Return to the WorkforceSo you took a break from your career to be a stay at home parent for a few years while your children were young. Now that they are getting older and are in school full-time, youre thinking about returning to the workforce. This might be a return to your former career or perhaps your interests and values have changed and you are interested in something completely different. Whatever you choose, know that you have developed some incredible skills during your time away from the workforce and those skills are in demand in todays workplaceAssuming it has been awhile since you have written a resume and launched a job search, you might be feeling overwhelmed given the amount of information available. A quick Google search for how to write a resume yields 144,000 results. Who has time to go through all those results, much less decide what is valid information? No t a stay at home mom After years of working with women returning to the workforce, Im offering 4 top tips on what to include on your stay at home mom resume.1) Tzu siche is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all resumeYou cannot create one resume and use it for every application. You must customize each one and target it to the position. Use the job posting as your guide. Pull out the keywords and skills and incorporate them into your resume. Otherwise, your resume will get lost and overlooked by applicant tracking systems. It might sound like a lot of work, editing your resume for each job you apply to, but it is critical to do this so your application will catch your readers attention.Jobscan removes the guesswork from this process.Just paste your resume and a job description below to landsee a prioritized list of skills, keywords, and other checks to consider.??2) Identify the skills you gained while raising your kidsEveryone has something to offer. Everyone. Not only that, but eve ry experience is marketable. Its all in how you present it. As a stay at home mother, you didnt necessarily get a paycheck each week, but that doesnt make your experience any less valuable. Being a stay at home parent is one of the hardest jobs you will ever have and the skills you gained are incredibly transferrable. Some of these skills include multi-tasking, communication, persuading, listening, research, organization, managing people, collaboration, and the ultimate mom skill negotiation. The list does not stop there.Consider ALL aspects of your life organizing schedules, managing a household, managing finances, volunteering for your school, volunteering for your church, being on a board, involvement in your community, sports coaching, etc. Ask yourself and make a list What do I do and how do I do it?To demonstrate this, I would like to introduce you to one of my clients. Laura left her career to stay at home and raise her two kids. When they were in school, she volunteered fo r the school playground project. This experience included fundraising, research, community presentations, and collaborating with the school, parents, and the company who was contracted to build the playground. After the project was finished, the company approached Laura to see if she would be interested in a part-time role. They were so impressed with the work that she did, and the skills that she demonstrated. At the time, she didnt think much about her involvement in the project, other then ensuring a fantastic space for her kids to play. In retrospect, it was amazing to identify the tasks she did and the skills she gained. If you are uncertain about your skills and need help identifying them, evaluate yourself. Get help from a career development professional or do some self-assessment on your own. Try reviewing these employability skills from the Conference Board of Canada to see what skills you have.3) Address the gap on your stay at home mom resumeA resume that has a gap in empl oyment can be a red flag for a recruiter. It is important to include employment dates, as this is information that employers look for. You will likely create a resume that contains information about the job(s) you had prior to raising your kids. Treat your experience as a stay at home mom as a position you held. Give it a title, include dates, and outline the activities, skills, and accomplishments you acquired during this time.Having said that, avoid tongue-in-cheek titles such as Chef, Domestic Engineer, Chauffeur, and Housekeeper. Its true you have done all these roles but using them as your job title on your resume will do you a disservice, confuse recruiters and applicant tracking systems, and not sell your transferable skills very well. To be blunt you wont be taken seriously. Instead, try something like Career Sabbatical to Raise Children. Your bullet points can include the skills you gained in your role as a stay at home parent that easily transfer to the position you are ap plying to. These are known as transferable skills.4) Does it add value? As you curate and compile all the content for your resume, a couple things to keep in the back of your mind are, Does this add value for my reader? Does it demonstrate my skills and accomplishments for the position I am applying to? In general, it is recommended that you avoid including the following on your resume, as many of these practices are not only dated, but they are taking up valuable space on your resumeObjective statementsReferences, and the term References available upon request.Avoid including information about your sexual orientation, religious and political affiliation, marital status, age, social security number, physical characteristicsInclude activities such as volunteer or community involvement, continuing education courses, freelance projects, professional development, or self-employment you may have had during your break from your career.Remember, a stay at home parent has an incredible skill set, both from their experiences as a mom, as well as her past experiences in other areas of life. By taking the time to identify the value you bring, it will make it easier to communicate this on your stay at home mom resume and to demonstrate your value to your next employer.Lise Stransky is a Certified Career Development Professional and founder of the career services firm, Careers That Work for You. Lise believes work should be meaningful. This is the number one value that guides her work with clients as she helps them to identify their skills, values and interests to find their ideal job.

I knew I wanted to either run my own business or manage a business in an industry I was passionate about. What was your first job?My first job was born out of the school work experience program where I was a sales assistant at my local surf store. From this first experience, I caught the retail bug and was fascinated with all things relating to retail. I have been in retail ever since.Explain a typical day at SurfStitch HQWhat I really love about my role today is that I dont really have a typical day. When you have a large team you tend to spend a lot of your time on people and rightfully so. Mondays are typically filled with analysing reports, forecasting and planning ahead and Tuesdays we get together as a leadership team and discuss strategy, projects and general business health. The rest of the week is split between people development, performance management and project management. No two weeks are the saatkorn which is the way I like it.When did you first know you wanted to work in business?I always liked working with people and teams and found myself naturally gravitating to leadership roles from a young age. My first management role was with the very same local surf store. It was this role where I became fond of numbers and understood the value of good leadership. I didnt really equate this with business back then however as I moved through my retail career, these early lessons in leadership and financial discipline became increasingly important.Name the most interesting thing thats happened to you in your careerI have been fortunate enough to travel with my career and had the opportunity to live in California for six months with my family. While it was daunting to pick up my family and move to a new country, we had an amazing experience that we will cherish forever. I have also been lucky to be involved in a very fast moving business and industry that has exposed me to an exc iting IPO as well as multiple merges and acquisitions that are always interesting, to say the least.Name the best and worst parts of your jobThe best part of my role is working with people and seeing them grow and succeed. Its also very rewarding to see our team strategy come to life and deliver great results. The worst parts of my role are often around delivering bad news to good people.Whats the most important career tip someone has given you?No one promised you it was going to be easy. This was from one of my first managers who instilled in me that you always have choices, even when it feels like you dont. Own your decisions. What do you wish someone had told you before starting in business management?Invest time and effort in developing your people. This is your most valuable resource and can either add multiples in value or cause you multiples in pain for your business. Take the time to ensure you have the RIGHT people in the RIGHT roles.Where do people have to start to become a business manager and what is a standard salary package for this role?I dont believe there is a single starting point for successful managers however I believe you need to be a good team player and you need to know how to get the best out of people by playing to peoples strengths. Salaries will vary wildly for managers depending on the level of management, the size of team, the size of the business and the industry you are in. Successful managers are valuable in all businesses and a quick Google will tell you how much the best managers and leaders can earn each year.Name a career highlightI can think of many moments over the past few years that bring me joy, however, a recent career highlight for me has been leading my team successfully through a very challenging period in our company. In some moments of serious adversity, our team really supported one another and achieved some excellent turn around results.Whats next for you?Im excited about the future. I have a great team that is strong and hungry to succeed. We have a lot of exciting opportunities ahead of us and we are poised to capitalise on these so the future looks bright. As far as my career I feel like I am only getting started in my current role so it feels premature to talk about whats next. I know in the future I would like to be in a standort to help other businesses succeed through sharing my knowledge and experience. This could be as part of a board or other leadership type role.Whats life outside the office like?I wish I had a hidden talent to blow you away however I dont. A not-so- fun fact is that I am a house proud gardener and spend much of my weekends, outside in the garden, dreaming up my next ambitious home improvement project.
